Is English Really Unfit For Its Koine Role?

Geoffrey Pullum talks about how unfit the English language is for a koine language over at The Chronicle. You can read his article here. Ouch, ouch, ouch. I never knew English was such a terrible language. It's not, of course. Every language has irregularities by the way because every language changes over time and gets thrown into a socio-cultural crock pot. I'll just say this . . . People don't choose which language gets to be the koine language, history (and the God of history) does. There's no back-room board meeting about what language is going to be the next koine. Of course, Pullum doesn't think anything like that happens. He's just evaluating his mother-tongue. Truth is there is a lot to leave us unsatisfied with the English language. But so it is with all languages.
