What Are The Best Types Of Illustrations To Use When We Teach And The Best Ways To Use Them?

So, what do you think are the best types of illustrations to use when we teach? Personal examples/stories?  Illustrations from biblical characters or other narratives? Stories from pop culture (e.g., movies) or current events? Church history? Or something else? What do you think? And what do you think is the best way to use them?

  1. Personally, I love all types of illustrations. I think there are some dangers when we have illustrations, though. I wonder how many pastors are using current-event illustrations on a given Sunday. The problem with current-event illustrations is people are often primed for them; that can inoculate us to how an illustration should and can affect us. Illustrations, after all, are not just mental. They should appeal to our emotions as well. An illustration used appropriately will connect to the passage in a way that is memorable and descriptive, but it should also evoke in us, whenever possible, a sense of awe or conviction.
